Review of Medela PersonalFit Small 21 mm Breastshields, 2-pk

I wanted to share my experience to help others decide if they should try a smaller breast shield. I have very prominent nipples/areolae (i.e. my areola is not flat on the breast but protrudes along with the nipple). Despite reading all the websites out there on proper fit, I had a hard time trying to figure out which part of my nipple/areolae was supposed to be in the tunnel. I experienced a lot of pain and bruising with the standard 24mm shields. Two different lactation consultants told me to go up to 30mm. The 30mm incorporated my entire nipple/areola and was even getting some regular breast tissue while pumping. Although the 30mm didn't hurt as much, it definitely was not comfortable--the discomfort was to the point where I worried that I was damaging my areola tissue because it was swelling so much afterwards. I also wasn't getting as much milk as I did with the 24mm. After looking at a lot of pictures of normal breast anatomy, I figured out that my nipple was not the whole protruding pigmented part of my breast, but just the tip (before it widens out into areola). I decided to go ahead and order these and I am so glad I did. Pumping doesn't hurt at all anymore--it is much more comfortable, almost to the point where I don't really notice it (compared to the other sizes, where I felt every single suction). My nipple fits into the tunnel without touching the sides and only a little bit of the areola goes in while pumping. If you are still not sure whether to get these, just remember that you know your body best and lactation consultants can sometimes be wrong.

Review of Medela Quickclean Wipes - 24-pk

These wipes have been a huge help for pumping on the go. Whether I am pumping at work or in the car, they are great because you don't need to rinse your pump parts. You should know that it doesn't get to the very center of the shield behind the valve, because the only way that gets truly clean is by running water through it.But I have been using these wipes for about 6 months and I have had no problems with infections or anything else.I do wash them when I get home at night...The wipes are also nice and thick so they work for 2 shields and up to 4 collection bottles.

Review of Lansinoh Manual Breast Pump

I love this pump. It's comfortable, does the job and it's easy to clean and reassemble. It packs up neatly and I take it work with me. It doesn't come with a travel case, but that's what Ziploc baggies are for. I like the fact that it came with spare parts in case one piece went missing and the storage bottles are just the right size. It will also work with Medela and Similac bottles.I'm sure the battery operated pumps are great, but I find this works just fine. I have yet to complain about a Lansinoh product.

Review of Easy Expression Bustier Hands-free Pumping Bra

After reading all the rave reviews about this product, I bought the medium sized one based on the sizing chart and it turned out to be so tight that I couldn't zip it up all the way. So, I ordered a second one, this time a large size and it turned out to be a little loose, the holes didn't center properly around the nipple and didn't hold the nipple shield in place for my medela pump, consequently the milk leaked and I had to hold the shields by hand throughout.

There is no way to adjust the bra to make it a little loose or little tight and the nipple holes are centered such that if it doesn't center on your breast correctly, there is no way to adjust it either. When regular bras are made with several hooks so you can adjust the tightness, why couldn't the manufacturer think about incorporating it in this specialized bra? I'm very disappointed by this sub-standard product, especially for the price.

Review of Playtex Manual Breast Pump

This is the best manual pump!It works so well that I get the same volume as with my electric pump only faster sometimes. The only thing I don't like about it is that when you are done it drips from the cup, same with the electric though.Maybe they need to angle it more to avoid that. Also when the bottle is screwed on, if you tip the pump over milk will spill out through the threads where the bottle is screwed on and fast, so be careful, its frustrating. But over all I am very happy with it.

Review of Medela Quick Clean Breastpump and Accessory Wipes 40 Pack

I am a teacher, and I have very limited time and space in which to pump. These wipes have saved me- one wipe can clean all the accessories for the Medela double pump. There isn't a strong smell or nasty feel, either- as long as you can allow the pieces to sit and dry for at least 10 minutes, they are ready to go.Obviously, it isn't as good as getting to a sink, but in my situation they have been perfect.I would recommend having these on hand for an emergency even if you can usually wash your accessories every time.

Review of Medela's SoftFit 24 mm. Breastshields 2-pk.

I love Medela. Love, love, love the brand. I am not one that needs to have brand name products, except when it comes to Medela because they have never done me wrong. I bought these shields as an additional set for my PIS (never hurts to have spare parts!) However, these are definitely not high on my list of favorite accessories. They stick to the skin badly and I would literally have to "peel" them off, which (as you would imagine) was very painful for such sensitive skin. I have only cleaned the shields in the MicroSteam bags, never in the dishwasher and I know they're not warped. I have found that if I put PureLan around the areola before pumping, there is no sticking and it's a more pleasant experience. I do not get more milk, as other reviewers have. I pump the same as I do with my hard shields (which I don't find uncomfortable at all) and there are little air bubbles that form where drops of milk get caught between the breast and shield. All in all now that I discovered the PureLan trick I'm happy, but I had many painful pumping sessions before this. If I ever need new shields I would not buy these again.

Review of Medela Extra Breast Shield/Valve/Membrane

I dont know why Medela is not selling this valves with their pumps instead of the two-piece valves. This one is much better and easier to clean, and since it is a one-piece, the pump works great without loosing pressure.
The package only include one valve with membrane, you may want to order two.
I bought two to have them as spare valves, and now I prefer them over the ones that came with Medela Pump In Style.

Great product

Review of Playtex Embrace Breast Pump System

I have only used this pump twice; the first time I used the pump, I was very diasppointed: I have quick let down and my baby nurses rapidly so I opted to use the greater strength suction in conjunction with the fastest speed available on the machine. The result: It took me half an hour to pump just under an ounce of milk!!!
After chatting to a lady at the Pump Station, she advised that:

1) Instead of pumping at night when the milk supply is at its lowest (which I had done), I should pump at the same time each morning.
2) I not use the strongest suction (which was very painful and almost gave my nipple blisters), but rather, progress gradually as a baby does.

The next day, I pumped at 10am.Before doing so, I massaged my breasts inward toward the nipple a couple of times to stimulate the supply, and.... VOILA!... I pumped 3 oz in 8 minutes!I didn't even need to use the greatest strength suction, instead, I opted to use the second level speed available and gradually increased the speed.

Some things to look out for:
1) If, for some reason, you do want to use the greatest strength suction (I can't imagine you'd need to even if your baby nurses hard like mine does) it reduces the speed of the machine. So, you have to choose between the strength of the suction or the speed but cannot have both at the same time!!!
2) Make sure you position the cups at the center of your nipple. It took me a few tries the second time round.Hint: 1) Your should not feel your skin around the nipple/on your breast being suctioned or pulled2) If you are unsure about the position of the pump, have a look in the mirror to check the imprint that the suction cup makes on your nipple to be sure.
3) Make sure that all parts of the system are clean/sterilzed and bone dry before using
4) There is NO need to sterilize or wash the tube that attaches to the pump (I've been told it will clog the system)

I hope this helps you with your purchase!

Review of Ameda Purely Yours Ultra Breast Pump & Tote

This pump was my fourth attempt at finding a pump that is right for me. My baby is currently six months old, and I have been using a breast pump since she was a few weeks old. My original breast pump is the Medela Free Style. I like it a lot. I think it does a good job of expressing a lot of milk in a short period of time. I also love the fact that it is hands-free. What I did NOT like about the Medela Free Style, however, were the nipple shields. After experiencing very sore nipples and eventually a bit of nipple trauma (ouch), I bought bigger breast shields for my Medela pump. Unfortunately, Medela does not take into account that nipple size and breast size do not necessarily have a correlation, and I found that the shields, while fine for my nipples, were too large for my breasts, and thus did not fit properly [incidentally, I have a friend who has the opposite problem -- large breasts and small nipples, and she had similar fit problems with the smaller Medela breast shields]. The result was inefficient pumping, and, again, sore nipples.

I was also one of the initial testers of the new MiPump. Hated it. Hated every part of it. If the pump hadn't been free, I would have been really angry over it. The only thing I did like about the pump was that it was lightweight and quiet.

My third pump is a manual pump -- the Avent Isis. I bought this pump after experiencing the nipple trauma from my Medela Free Style. I needed to continue to pump at work, but without further injuring myself. What I loved about the Avent Isis is that you could "hold" the suction for long periods of time. This is a very efficient way to get milk. What I hated about it is that it's manual, so in order to get the same amount of milk I could from the Medela, I would have to spend twice as much time. I also was limited in my activities while using the manual pump.

So I set out to find a pump that would give me the best of what I experienced in the other three pumps I own. I wanted the efficiency and convenience of the Medela Free Style, the quietness of the MiPump, and the suction flexibility of the Avent Isis.I think the Ameda Purely Yours Ultra comes as close to anything I've read about in accomplishing this task.

Efficiency/Convenience: I've read some reviews on here for the previous version of the Ameda Purely Yours, which say that this pump is superior to the Medela in terms of efficiency. I wouldn't go quite that far. I think it is just as efficient as the Medela Free Style. But it is $100 cheaper, so that scores a win in the Ameda column. It is not a "hands-free" pump, but I've found that with a good nursing bra, I can place the shields in my bra, and after suction starts, let them go. They will stay in place, and I can continue to do work. Major plus. Even better, no nipple trauma. The pump comes with three different size nipple shields, and there is an option to order another larger size. I am using the largest size and unlike the Medela, the breast shield size is the same as the smaller sizes. I have no problems with the fit!

Sound: The Ameda is by no means silent, but outside of a manual pump, you'd be hard pressed to find a good pump that is. It is fairly quiet, and I have found that I can talk on the phone without the other person knowing that I am pumping.

Suction: This is the best function. There are separate dials for speed and suction. You start with the dials on the highest speed to encourage let-down and on the highest suction that is comfortable for you. After let-down, you set the speed lower (I often set it to the lowest at first). After a few minutes, if you need to encourage more let-down, you set the speed on high again. This is a great function. I can't hold the suction quite as long as I can with the Isis, but it's pretty close. I am able to pull a stream of milk for a few seconds, and I think this is really efficient.

Other pluses:Although not pictured, the Ameda Purely Yours Ultra comes with a very cute tote bag, a cooler bag and six bottles. The three ice packs in the cooler bag are very thin, so they don't take up a lot of space in your freezer. They are also very good. They keep my milk cold all day. I don't have to leave my office to store the bottles. Huge plus. Additionally, my Medela bottles (which my child prefers to use) weren't a huge waste, because the Medela bottles screw into the Ameda breast pump. I can pump directly into the Medela bottles.

Although this pump is by no means perfect, it is very good. Having used three other pumps, I can say it is definitely the best pump I've tried yet.

UPDATE: When I initially wrote my review, I had only tried using it with the plug. This is the pump that stays at my office, so there was really no need to use the battery operation. Since then, I've tried using it with the battery, and the operation is spotty at best. Granted, I only tried a couple of times and with some really cheap batteries; but I thought it only fair to amend my 5-star review to a 4-star in case there is anyone who needs to use the unit with batteries only. From my limited experience, they didn't work very well. However, the cord to the plug is very long, so unless you're traveling, you should be able to get by without needing to use batteries.

Review of Simple Wishes Hands Free Pumping Bustier Bra, Soft Pink, L/XL/XXL

I just discovered this hands free pumping device after the birth of my second child.I tried easy expressions, the pumping bra by la leche league, and made by moms pumping band with my first child.Don't waste your time trying them even if you can find them at discounted prices. These products all offer assistance, but are not hands free.It truly is a hands free product.

Here's what I love about it.
1.It will fit any woman's body perfectly and is adjustable, so as your body changes postpartum you will not need to buy another size. The front zipper panel allows you to adjust the placement of the breast shields and the panel in the back allows you to adjust the overall size.Amazing!
2.The fabric is soft and comes in a nice light pink color.
3.Believe it or not the bra actually supports bottles completely full of milk.
4.I don't use the straps, but it's a nice add for the woman who wants a little more support.
5.The packaging is so cute.

Above, I mentioned that I tried three other products with my first child.

Here's what I did not like about each of them.
Easy Expressions
1.If you are not lined up perfectly with the holes the bustier will not work for you.
2.There is no support at the top to prevent the breast shields from slipping down while pumping. OUCH!
3.I had to buy a medium and large size.Depending on my milk supply, I would alternate between the two sizes.
4.The packaging is horrible.

La Leche Leage
1.Nice idea, but offers absolutely no support of the bottles.

Made By Moms
1.Is somewhat supportive of the bottles but so stiff and uncomfortable.

Review of Easy Expression Hands Free Bustier Nursing Bra

This product is wonderful. I admit when I first saw it being advertised (before my baby was born) I giggled because it looks pretty ridiculous. However I have to eat my words now, because this makes pumping bearable, I can use my laptop or read a book instead of sitting there holding the bottles in place. Before buying this I tried the Medela pumping free kit, which is laughably poor (and unreliable) in comparison. This bustier is comfortable and functional. Works with any size of Medela personalfit breastshields (unlike their own product) or nipple shields. I can't recommend it enough. If you need to pump regularly, you will want this bustier to save your sanity.

Review of Playtex Nursing Necessities One Step Breast Milk Storage Kit

I have a medela pump in style and also an ameda purely yours, these work with both pumps.

My little man is getting breastmilk only.He has not had any formula or supplement and I have been back at work for a month.I will not lie, pumping enough for his daycare feedings for an 8 hour day is a lot of work.I have to pump 16 oz per day for the four bottles he will need the next day.In the evenings when I get home I don't want to spend all my time cleaning bottles.

My son took to the playtex nursers right away and I have never had any trouble with nipple confusion. He switches easily from bottles to breast. The nursers are great because I don't have to wash the four bottles he used at daycare; just the nipples, rings, and caps.I wash the bottles every three days in the dishwasher instead but they never look like they need it.What I didn't like about the nursers was that they weren't compatible with my pump so I would pump into other bottles then pour that milk into the nursers in the evenings when I got home. Then I would have to clean 4 bottles and caps in addition to the items from daycare that needed to be washed. It seemed like a waste of time.

I like this system since you can pump right into the drop-ins liners. This saves me extra bottle clean up each evening when I get home. You can use the system in two different ways as well. You can put a liner into the ring, pump, and cap just as shown for this product; then store the whole thing on the cap in the fridge.I prefer to put a liner into the nurser bottle then pump right into that.I then cap the bottle and store it upright in the fridge or my transport cold pack. When I get home I just switch the cap for a nipple and cap and I'm ready for the next day.At the end of the day I only have to was the caps!Much quicker and with a baby, time is always precious.

As other reviewers have stated, this system is ideal for pumping for the next day.It is not as ideal for freezing or longer term storage since these take up a bit of space in the freezer (I prefer freezer bags that freeze flat). You will want two kits if you use a double pump and in that way you will get two adapters and 12 rings/caps so you are good to go.

Review of Playtex Nursing Necessities Petite Double Electric Breast Pump

The power box that turns it on and off is annoyingly loud. It's loud enough to give me a headache and get super annoyed. Also part of the bottle that screw into the top leaks and drips down the inside of the bottle and out the bottom. It's annoying to have to hold the cups on my breast and lean forward the whole time so the milk will actually flow down into the bottle (otherwise it just sits in the cups and builds up around your breast). I only gave it two stars because after a while you will get your milk pumped but it's not a pleasant procedure. I have nothing to compare it to but I'm sure there is no way but up from this one... Keep looking, this isn't a good one.

Review of The First Years Natural Comfort Breast Pump Kit

I BOUGHT THIS PUMP AFTER MY NIPPLES BECAME CRACKED & STARTED TO BLEED DUE TO MY DAUGHTER'S AGRESSIVE NURSING (SHE CHEWS!!).I TRIED A MANUAL PUMP & AN AUTOMATIC DOUBLE PUMP, BOTH WORKED POORLY. THIS PUMP HAS A PLIABLE SHEILD THAT CREATES A GOOD SEAL WITH THE BREAST. THE AUTO RELEASE SUCTION IS SO CONVENIENT, OTHER MORE EXPENSIVE PUMPS HAVE TO BE MANUALLY RELEASED. WHY BUY A NAME (MEDELA) WHEN YOU GET CAN A BETTER PRODUCT FROM A REPUTABLE COMPANY LIKE FIRST YEARS? OTHER REVIEWERS SAID THIS PUMP HURTS BUT THEY OBVIOUSLY DID NOT USE IT CORRECTLY. THE BATTERY POWERED OPTION EVEN ALLOWS ME TO PUMP ON THE GO (LIKE IN THE CAR WHILE MY HUBBY DRIVES, DARK TINT HELPS :)) I LOVE THIS PUMP I CAN PUMP 4-6OZ IN ABOUT 15MIN.

Review of Philips Avent Isis iQ Valves

Let's face it - you just never know exactly when these things will wear out, and you don't want to be stuck with a bum valve and bulging breast!Having a supply of these on hand is great - just pop a new one in when you need it, no need to drive anywhere (or in my case, just be stuck since nobody anywhere around even carries these).

Review of The First Years Natural Comfort Deluxe Double Breast Pump

I read the other reviews and was weary about buying this one but I really couldn't afford anything more and I wanted a double pump. I AM SO GLAD I BOUGHT THIS PUMP. I love it!!! My friend has a Medela and mine works just as well for ¼ of the price.

LITTLE NOISE - I previously owned an Evenflo Comfort pump. It worked ok but was very loud, was a single, and took me about 30 min to pump. With this one you can hear the motor but it is NOT loud. Plus it is far enough away from the breast cups that if you do find it irritating you can simply cover it with a blanket or pillow.

SUCTION - It takes a few times to get everything just right but the suction is great and there are two nipple guards to help if you have trouble getting a good fit. It does hurt if you turn it too high so you need to find a good setting. It does not need to be pressed hard against your chest but you might need to use the nipple guards. Also if the cups are not locked into place or if the flap setups are not pushed in all the way the suction will be poor but it is easy to tell since the cups click twice when in correctly. The flap setups you just need to be sure to push in all the way.

CLEANUP - My Evenflo had several parts to clean. It was annoying. This one only has three per side. Since they are put together so tightly I just wash each side as one piece after each pumping and then take them completely apart 3-4 times a week to run through the dishwasher. Just be sure to put them in a washing container (available in the baby feeding aisle) on the top rack.

EQUIPMENT - This pump is so customizable it's not even funny. It is set up originally for wide mouth bottles but has a wide-to-skinny bottle adapter. My adapter was a little difficult to screw in so I just used the original. It can also be used as a single pump easily and can be battery powered (although I have not used the battery setup so I don't know how well it works). The bottles come with the nippled tops and with plain closed storage lids.

GOOD CUSTOMER SERVICE - After about 2 months there was a small plastic piece that holds the flap in place that came loose. I called the number in the info booklet and they sent me two new insert setups in about 4 days with no problems. It helps to call the right number. Plus it's no guarantee with any company that everyone you talk to will be helpful or courteous. I recently spoke to a very rude Wachovia rep, that doesn't mean they're a bad bank.

NEGATIVES - *I wish you didn't have to use the center support as I would rather use a nursing strap but you have to use it as the suction is built into it.The support is easy to hold though, and with one hand too.*After pumping the bottles don't screw in tight enough and milk will leak out if they fall over.*The carrying case is flimsy so I just bought my own in Wal-Marts cosmetic aisle.

I would definitely recommend this pump to anyone.

I hope this helps!

Review of Simple Wishes Hands Free Pumping Bustier Bra, Soft Pink, XS/S/M

I bought 2 of these from Amazon and it was so much better than what I was using before. This is a really well designed and thought product. That is why I was surprised when I found this piece of Velcro was sown inside with the cloth and hence rubbed against my back causing pain (you know what can happen when velcro rubs against skin). I figured out a way to use it without it hurting me but I still wanted to call the company and give them my feedback because I thought this was otherwise such a neat product. Anyways, I called the company and left a message in their voice mail. I got a call back the same day. Apparently, there were some made with this Velcro problem which they had removed from their stock but somehow Amazon had not removed theirs. Without my asking they said that they would send me 2 without the Velcro problem for free. And I got them the next day by FedEx. So, great product and customer service. The only caution is that Amazon may still be carrying the wrong ones. Hopefully, they would be removed from stock soon.

Review of Lansinoh Breastmilk Storage Bottles, 4-Count Pack (Pack of 2)

One word of caution...The bottles are fine, the seals and tops work well. The problem, if you want to identify it as such, is that the bases of the bottles are too large to fit in the holders on the Lansinoh double electric pump. So, while you *can* use them to collect your milk with the pump, they will not fit in the holders on the pump body. Thus, if you have to set them down to adjust something or while you attach the seals and tops, your milk can spill if they get bumped and tip over...remember they are rather tippy with the breast flanges attached.
