Review of Lansinoh 20435 Breastmilk Storage Bags, 25-Count Boxes (Pack of 3)

I have found these bags to be the best ones out there. They are thicker mm of plastic, have a double seal and a separate area to write on to avoid ink contamination. In my opinion, they are also much easier to pour to/from than other brands.

I also appreciate how they lay flat for more space-efficient storage. They have held up very well in my deep freeze in arctic temperatures!

I have used approximately 2,000 bags (seriously) and I have had only 9 that leaked. While I was sorry to lose those bags, I consider 9/2,000 to be pretty impressive odds.

These are more expensive than other ones out there, but I will pay that price to store my "liquid gold"!

If you are continually having difficulty with leaking bags, make sure you are freezing no more than 6 ounces at a time. Even though it looks like it will hold more, the milk will expand in the freezer. Also, you may want to freeze smaller quantities of milk so that there is less waste. You want to ensure that your baby will drink all that you defrosted, rather than having to discard it. I found it helpful to freeze some amounts in larger quantities, like 4 or 6 ounces and then smaller "top off" amounts for 2 or 3 ounces. Smaller amounts also less time to thaw...although this means you will use more bags. Also, don't drop them once they are frozen, which can also contribute to leaks.

Review of Evenflo Comfort Select Dual Auto-Cycling Breast Pump

I have had this pump for about a week and used it 9 or 10 times for 20 minutes each time.I got it b/c my milk supply has been dwindling with a single pump and I need to increase it (supposedly double-pumping is better for emptying out both breasts and increasing supply, no matter how long you pump with a single).

The pump has its pros and cons. For me, it worked fine.I have not had a problem with milk backing up (some other users suggested that it needs to be dry; since I always wash it right after using, it's dry again by the next time I use it).It doesn't hurt any more or less than my Avent IQ Uno single electric pump.I get just as much or more milk in less time than with the Avent (due to pumping both breasts at once).I agree with other users that the side without the motor is a bit weaker, but I just switch sides after 10 minutes and it's no big deal.

On the other hand, it is LOUD!I was hoping to take it to work, but I don't want everyone in the office to hear it.(I pump in a conference room with a real door, but you would still be able to hear it!)So I just use it at home on my lunch break and before I go to bed (we use the closed captions on the TV so we can still watch TV while I pump). There are a lot of small parts, and it's hard to wash inside the narrow passages of the funnel section.I always wash it immediately, because if milk dried in there, it would be hard to ever get it out...and I can't wipe it out with my sanitizing wipes (another reason I don't use it at work). And it is more of a pain to assemble than the Avent.

Since I only plan on pumping for a few more months (my baby is 8 1/2 months old), it wouldn't be worth it to pay $300 for a Pump-in-Style or whatever. This isn't the greatest, mainly due to the noise (and I can't be sure about its longevity yet), but if it lasts for its warranty period, it will have done the job I bought it for!

Review of Philips AVENT Manual breast pump Out and about set

I have 2 of these pumps and they are fantastic.I find it to be easy and efficient to use...and I've been using it for over a year.It is THE BEST hand pump on the market.I ALSO have a Medela Pump N Style double electric pump...but I must say that the Avent Isis works just as well.I alternate between the two types of pumps depending on my schedule.I keep my Pump In Style at work...as it is faster to pump both sides at once...but I use the Avent Isis at home and on weekends...or if I am going to be away from the office for business travel, tradeshows, or off site meetings. It is compact and small and easy to pack for the day or a trip, etc.It is comfortable...you have a lot of control over the suction...and I can express just as much milk with this hand pump as I can with my electric pump.
All of the Avent products are fantastic. I can't recommend them more highly. My biggest advice to anyone looking into breast pumps is NOT to buy ANYTHING sold by formula manufacturers...they do not care if you are successful breastfeeding.Avent and Medela products are wonderful. This is the absolute best pump for the money. My friend Christine used hers for over a year while working...it was the only pump she had...and she did great with it.

Review of Medela Symphony Breast Pump

My insurance company provided this pump for me since I was released from the hospital before my baby.It is great! When we were in the hospital we were using the Ameda Elite which was making me sore and had a hard time maintaining equal suction on both sides.Although the parts of the Symphony are slightly harder to wash it is a far superior machine. The breast shields are smoother and more comfortable. The one knob operation is very easy and intuitive.I don't know why exactly, but it is the only Medela machine rated for use with preemie babies.

Review of Ameda Purely Yours Carry All Breast Pump Traveler Backpack

For a mom-to-be pregnant with twins, I thought purchasing a good hospital grade pump would probably be needed.I was gunghoe on nursing the girls...not to meantion the savings in formula costs.Well, I lucked out and found this one on ebay brand new in packaging for $130 - good deal, right? At $200, $300, or $400 this would have been a GREAT deal. This pump ROCKS!My girls ended up being born 8 weeks early and this allowed me to pump exclusively until the girls were ready to nurse - 3 months later! No need to rent a pump - this is a good as you can get without owning a huge cumbersome hospital unit.Plus, the car adapter was a must with me.I pumped while driving (not sure what the cops would have thought about that - but mom has to do what she has to do). Then it can take batteries - great if you want to take it to the county fair or a sporting event.Plus, it is totally compatible with all hospital pump parts (made by Ameda - my hospital used ameda).Any way - this pump saved me money on formula (I probably would have given up if my supply dwindled - but this pump kept it up there) and it allowed me to get out of the house. This thing was my best friend for 3 months straight.Highly recommended and easy to use!

Review of Easy Expression Halter Hands Free Pumping Bra

A bra that you can't wear all day? What a pain to have to change bras! After becoming frustrated with the process I sewed two pieces of elastic into each cup of my nursing bras that have the circles that surround your breast (don't think it would work with the ones that don't have this). All you need is four pieces of elastic for each bra you want to transform.I sewed the elastic vertically on either side of each nipple. When it's time to pump I simply make an 'X' with the elastic (pull left piece over shield to the ride side of nipple and vice versa) and viola..hands free.I've even been able to pump while driving cross country (had to stop to place the cups on and off of course).$1.00 of elastic and I now have four 'hands free' nursing bras that I can also wear all day!

Review of Avent Isis Manual Breast Pump

Everyone on Earth told me, "Don't cheap out and get a manual pump!Get the Medela!!!"I do like the Medela, but...well, read on.

Last week, when my baby hit 4 weeks, my husband and I spent the weekend on a mini-vacation while my mother-in-law took care of the baby.I didn't want to take my big, luggy Pump-in-Style along and set it up in the hotel room, just to express milk that I wouldn't keep because I had nowhere to keep it.So I went to the drugstore and bought the Avent Isis, about which I'd heard good things.

Compared to the electric pump, this was SOOOOOOO CONVENIENT.All you have to do is hook up an Avent bottle (or disposable breastmilk cup) and go.There's no tubing to plug in, no bag to lug around, etc.I got just as much milk out of this as I do from my Medela P.I.S.It was easy on my hand, too, and I have a tiny, tiny bit of residual carpal tunnel syndrome left over from pregnancy. The milk just flowed.

Also, I was already using Avent bottles, so that makes this even easier. If you want to store your milk in Avent bottles but use another brand of pump, you have to buy Avent's bottle-neck adapters.(I have these, too, for the electric pump.)

With the electric pump (for the unfamiliar out there), you have to hook up tubing between the part that gets the milk from your breast, and your electric pump unit (concealed in the fashionable bag). You also have to hook up a plug from your bag/pump unit to the wall.It is annoying if one end of the tubing, say, touches the floor or your pet comes up and gets his face on it before you get started (have to re-clean and start over). There are other annoyances, but the setting up is the most inconvenient part of the electric pump. With the manual pump--and the Avent Isis is a particularly good one--you just hook the bottle to one end of the pump, put it up to your breast, and get milk.

I guess the one advantage of the electric pump is that you can pump both breasts at the same time.

I don't find the Isis to be remarkably slower than the P.I.S.And I get just as much milk.(Some people don't.)If I had less money and economy were more of a consideration, I'd surely try this pump first before trying an electric pump.

So...

PROS
--easy setup
--very portable
--gets as much milk as an electric pump (at least, for me)
--economical (much cheaper than electric)
--if you use Avent bottles, it's easy storage
--almost as fast as electric pump (at least, for me)
--hooks right up to Avent bottles OR disposable cups
--Avent adapters separately available for use with other brands of bottles

CONS
--only pumps one breast at a time
--doesn't always get good milk from all people, but does from many

Oh!One more thing: if you want to store your milk in bags, whether you use an electric or manual pump, just express the milk into a clean bottle and pour it into a bag.The Medela has a complicated method for expressing right into a bag, but it takes EVEN LONGER to set up.And use Lansinoh bags.

Review of Playtex Embrace Breast Pump System

I own this pump and the Medela Pump in Style Advanced. There are pros and cons to each. I will share my thoughts on both so that hopefully you can make an educated decision about which one to choose.

The Playtex pump breast shields are made from soft silicone, so they imitate the nursing baby more closely. The Playtex silicone shield gently presses the areola while drawing the nipple out and expressing milk. The Medela pump comes with hard plastic shields, so they do not press the areola while drawing the nipple out. As you may know, the gentle pressure on the areola is what stimulates both milk production and letdown. This feature of the Playtex pump was important to me because I pump exclusively (5-6 times a day) and it is vital that I keep my supply up. Using the Playtex pump seemed to increase/stabilize my supply.

Also, because both pumps come with clear breast shields, I am able to see exactly how many nipple openings are releasing milk. Hands down, more openings are engaged with the Playtex pump.

Another advantage of the Playtex over the Medela is that it comes with a car charger and several organization bags, as well as an ice pack for about the same price as the Medela or cheaper. One of the cons of the Playtex pump is that the breast shields themselves are larger than the Medela, and have more parts to assemble (4 parts make up one breast shield). I found that if I have not assembled the shields just right, it interferes with the suction. The Medela shields are smaller (easier to hold, especially for those with small hands), and only require two parts to assemble them. This also helps out when traveling.

Another con of the Playtex pump is that I was unable to find many accessories for it in stores for immediate purchase. I had to go to [...] to order extra breast shields and other items, therefore I had to wait for them to ship. Lastly, I have had to contact both manufacturers for help with my products. When I contacted Playtex, they overnighted me the equipment I needed (I called at about 2pm one afternoon and got it at 8am the next morning...WOW!!! Great service). When I contacted Medela, they sent my items via Priority Mail, so it took 3 days for me to receive what I needed.

Both pumps are excellent, but if I had to choose, I would choose the Playtex over the Medela simply because the soft silicone breast shield allows me to maintain my supply more easily. Sorry for being so long-winded, but I just wanted to share my experience with you about these products to help you make a better decision. Happy nursing, and remember: Breast is Best!!!

Review of Philips Avent Isis iQ Duo Twin Electronic Breast Pump

I've had my new IQ Duo for 2 weeks now. Previously, I was using an Ameda PY, which I used several years ago for my daughter and began using again for my now 4 month old son. I work full time, so use the pump 3 times a day during the week. I bought the new pump because the motor on my PY was getting a little flaky and I was hoping to get more milk with the Duo since I'd had good results in the past with the Isis manual. It does seem to help me get more milk - at a good pump, 6 ounces instead of my usual 3 to 4. So I'm extremely happy with the pump in that respect because right now, my life is all about having enough milk to leave for the next day. I thought I'd elaborate though, so here are my pros, cons, etc...

Pros:

You can adjust the suction strength, length of time the suction lasts, and the "rest period," all just by pumping manually a few times. This is the exact reason that I splurged on a new pump. With the Isis manual, I would always hold the suction until the milk stopped spurting. The cycle settings on my PY went nowhere near holding suction for that long. And when I made the cycle longer on the PY, the rest time between suctions seemed to increase too. With the Duo, you can make the suction period really long and the rest period really short - or any other combination that works for you. I can almost always get a second let-down, which was very elusive with the PY.

The cord is very long and the plug is a standard plug, not the big boxy thing like on the PY, so it takes up less space on the outlet.

I like the bags they give you for carrying your horn setup. And I like the fact that you can, in effect, seal off the horn assembly with the sealing base and the cover/bottle holder. It makes it very convenient to store them in the fridge in between pumpings (which of course the manual says you're not supposed to do since they should be sterilized before every use).

Supposedly, the valves don't need to be replaced for a very long time. The customer service rep I spoke to said with proper care, the valves would last over a year. And they include 2 extra valves in the box.

Avent customer service is great. I called to order extra horns ($9 each) and diaphragms ($15 each - maybe that should go in the cons), and the lady had a long conversation with me about how I liked the pump and offered lots of tips.

Cons:

It takes a lot longer to set up than my PY. With the PY, I always left the tubing and power cord attached. The Duo needs to be unhooked to fit in the bag. I did finally figure out that I could leave the power cord plugged into the pump and still zip up the front of the bag. I suppose I could do it with the tubing and control wire too, but I'm afraid they'll get bent or crimped so I unplug them every time. There are also a lot of things to connect - the air tubing, (which is a pain to plug/unplug because you really have to yank on it) the control wire, and the electric cord, which comes apart into 2 pieces, so I know one of these days, I'll be missing one piece of the cord and have to run home for it.

Once you've got the horns attached to the bottle, the setup doesn't stand up by itself. I think it's the petal insert that makes it top heavy. They do provide the piece that seals off the opening of the horn and doubles as a stand, but for me, it's just one more piece to forget. And if you're using the VIA bases, you're out of luck since they don't lock into the base stand. The control handle takes a lot of force to pull off- I'm afraid I'm going to be pulling too hard, have it pop off, and then knock over my bottles. The tubing is also fused together about half of its length (from where it connects to the pump up toward the control handle and double pump cap), which makes it very precarious to detach the tubing while holding both bottles so nothing tips. Also, the tubing (with the integrated control wire) is very heavy and stiff, so handling everything is awkward and it seems like there's more chance for accidentally knocking, dropping, or tipping. And yes, I do cry over spilt milk.

The cooler bags are small and have no handles for carrying separately. And who wants to keep track of 8 little icepacks? I already lost one somewhere in the depths of my freezer. Each bag only fits 2 4-ounce bottles or 2 6-ounce VIA bases. And the VIA bases especially are a really tight squeeze to get in there with the 4 icepacks.

The motor really doesn't seem any quieter than the PY, which doesn't really bother me except that the advertising led me to believe it would be quieter, and I can imagine it might be important for some people.

The control button is in a bad spot for anyone who sits at a desk while pumping. I keep hitting it on the edge of my desk, which makes the motor stop. I do like the fact that they put the control on the handle within easy reach, I just think it would have been better placed on the top somewhere. It also seems to be a little harder to lean against the edge of my desk to hold the horns on and continue to type with both hands like I do with my PY. I think the petal inserts make it not suction to the outer part of the breast as much, so they're harder to keep in place just by leaning against something.

Lack of "custom" parts. I started using the larger barrel diameter horns with my PY, and Avent doesn't offer (and has no plans to offer) a larger diameter horn. Without the petal insert, my nipple eventually gets sucked all the way to the back of the barrel. I have to keep breaking the suction and reapplying. With the petal insert, my nipple doesn't get sucked in so far, but I still have milk ducts that are up against the side of the barrel (which also happens with the standard PY horns, and didn't seem to affect my milk production too much).

The Duo seems a little less comfortable to use than my PY. I tried both with and without the petal inserts, but I seem to get sore no matter what, whereas I don't with the PY. Or maybe I have the suction stronger- I will have to experiment with that.

Milk gets stuck under the diaphragm part, so when I'm done, I need to remove that part and dump that milk into the bottle. It just makes the whole process take a little longer.

Versus the PY, there are a lot more parts. The integrated air tube/control wire and the control handle are probably expensive to replace if they break. They look pretty durable, but being external parts they'll be exposed to more wear and tear. Avent customer service couldn't even give me a price for replacement of those parts, but did suggest that they would work with a customer if there were any problems.

Nit-picky things:

The status light is not visible when the pump is in the bag, so if you want to leave it in the bag while you pump, you need to pull it out a little to see it. You're supposed to check that the light goes from flashing to constant on before starting, which happens within seconds, so it's not that big of a deal.

It would be more convenient if the zipper on the front where the pump is stored were a 2-zipper system so you could pull both zippers up from the sides toward the top.

Observations:

I always get more milk from the non-control side, even though I've tried the control on both sides. The Avent rep said suction should be equal on both sides and suggested that I check and make sure everything was sealed correctly, which I've done but still seem to have a problem.

Review of The First Years - Easy Comfort Manual Breast Pump

I bought this pump for using at work and for taking on a vacation. It was extremely convenient, and I loved using it!!That's why I was so disappointed when I started having some problems with the suction.Because of my previous success, I wasn't ready to give up on it and called the First Years Parent Service for help.Their customer service was awesome and they talked me through a cleaning process which brought my suction back to life!!
To save other moms (who might be having the same problem) a phone call, here's what they told me. I took notes, so for anyone interested:

-To check for milk in pumping mechanism/to clean the inside of the pump; twist the blue rim to take off the top. Then flip it over and line the little blue hole up with the middle of the handle and pull the two pieces apart. Then I just took out the clear plastic part and handwashed the inside parts of the pump separately.
-To put back together; place the clear plastic part back into the blue part. They told me to rub my finger around the edges of the clear plastic to make sure there were no air bubbles (not doing this step was the reason I was having problems with the suction!!)To attach the two pieces, make the hook on the white handle, clip under the white "push pin".In order to twist these two parts together, its important to flip it over again and line the little blue hole up with the middle of the handle, then twist a half way around so the little hole is furthest away from the handle. In attaching the handle to the rest of the pump, just line up the two arrows, then twist so that the arrow on the handle lines up with the line on the other part.

I'm still using this pump and its working great!!I would definitely recommend it for the on-the-go and busy moms!!

Review of Medela Pump in Style Advanced Breast Pump

I used the Medela pump in style original shoulder bag for the first 6 months, then purchased the pump in style advanced backpack to use at work.I continue to use both. Each has its advantages and disadvantages.Bottom line--the advanced gets the milk out a little bit faster (cuts 5-10 minutes off of pumping, but I still have to pump for at least 15 minutes), and the advanced occasionally gives me an ounce or two more milk than the original, but the original was perfectly adequate too.Which one you like better will depend on your let down cycle.I spoke with Medela and they confirmed that the advanced may be difficult to use for women who experience multiple letdowns or have a difficult time letting down.

The advanced sucks quickly for 2 minutes to trigger letdown, then switches to slow, deep suction to extract the fatty hindmilk.

The advanced assumes that you will let down within the first two minutes of rapid sucking, then the rest of your milk will be expressed in the phase 2 slow suction. However, if you have several letdowns with a little bit of milk coming out each time like me, then after each cycle of letdown (when your milk stops coming out), you have to turn the unit off and then on again to put it into the initial two minute let down phase to trigger another fast letdown. It's kind of a pain, but not that big of a deal and works ok.Just be warned that the 2 minute computer program is better suited for women who have 1 big letdown and can get all of the milk out in one cycle. The other alternative is to just let the machine run in the slow sucking phase and wait for several letdowns to occur, which is exactly what you would have to do with the pump in style original anyway.

It just speeds the process to have the advanced and switch the unit off and then on again, though I'm concerned that long term this would not be good for the motor.Note that Medela actually told me that many women are having to do this though, and didn't caution me that it might break it.Here's some additional info (I haven't covered certain things that I think are adequately covered in other reviews, but if you have questions let me know):

Pros of the Original shoulder tote:
1. Simple to use, you can separately control the speed and the suction with separate knobs.
2. It's not the fastest, but is perfectly adequate at getting out a decent amount of milk. It is totally reliable.
3. It is relatively quiet.

Cons of the Original shoulder tote:
1. Takes anywhere from 5-15 minutes longer than the advanced (but before I tried the advanced I never thought that the Original was too slow or anything like that.It was not a problem.I still use it twice a day and think it's fine).
2. Cooler isn't removable.Motor isn't removable.

Pros of the Advanced backpack:
1. Good storage pockets.More storage than the Original Traveler backpack, which I saw in the store.
2. Cooler and motor are removable.
3. Speeds up the pumping process by 5-15 minutes.Seems to give a bit more milk than the Original (but it doesn't double the amount of anything like that).

Cons of the Advanced backpack:
1. The microfiber bag on the advanced backpack and tote looks a little cheap. The Original traveler backpack looks better quality.
2. The unit is loud.
3. A bit more complicated to use, especially if you are just starting out pumping for the first time and don't know your letdown cycle too well. The instruction booklet stinks, so I would recommend calling Medela for tips about when to turn the unit off and then back on again to trigger letdown if you are having problems.
4. There is only one control for both speed and suction. The instruction book doesn't tell you this (at least not that I can recall seeing), but fyi the Medela rep told me to actually turn the knob "down" when you want to increase the suction on the advanced, because that means slower, harder sucking on the advanced (on the original you would turn the suction knob "up" to mean harder sucking).

A word about the manufacturer's defects: I researched this and spoke with Medela reps several times about it.There were 2 defects with the new model.First, the diaphragm faceplate on the early models pops off or is not snug, leading to weaker suction.Second, in the early model the rubber port plug that you need to keep plugged in when double pumping slips out, leading to weaker suction as well.In response, Medela did a subtle redesign of the faceplate which should cure the problem, and that's why you see people saying they've received replacement faceplates.

Problem is, there is no way to tell if you are purchasing old stock or new stock, even from a big retailer like buy buy baby, so you won't know if you are getting one with the new model faceplate or not until it's too late.Just try to get the retailer to confirm that it's stock recently came from Medela.Once you buy it, check out the plug and faceplate, if it seems to be coming off or slipping out, call Medela and they should send you the replacement for free. Also, fyi, www.momsmaternity.com has the advanced shoulder tote and backpack for only $236.I just got it and it was brand new and works fine, plus they were very nice. This is not a plug for that website, since there are other internet sites that have it for as low as $204, I just wanted to share my good experience with that website fyi.

In summary, the Original is perfectly adequate, but the Advanced is good if you want to save a few minutes, as long as you understand letdown cycles enough to be able to know when to turn it off and back on again if necessary. The Original is good because it's stood the test of time and is totally reliable and simple to use.I wouldn't purchase the advanced over the Original unless you think saving 5-10 minutes each time is important and getting 1 ounce or so more milk is worth the extra cost.It may work better for you than that, but I wouldn't expect it necessarily.I bought the advanced thinking it was going to double the amount that I pump out and cut pumping down from 20 to 5 minutes, and that hasn't happened(although it may work that way for you, just no guarantee), though I do appreciate the few minutes it saves each day.

Review of Evenflo Comfort Select Performance Dual Electric Breast Pump

I used this pump for many months with my first child and am about to add it to my registry for my second. I didn't notice it being too noisy because I've never used another one. Occassionally, the small parts inside the pump would stick or back up with milk, but it was only once in a while (and after many months of use) and it was a quick fix. I pumped probably about 3 days a week for 2 -3 feedings a day. I saw bad reviews when I bought it the first time, but justified myself by saying even if I had to replace it after a few months, it would still be 3x cheaper than the highly coveted Medela one (which I badly want but just can't afford).A relative had recommended it to me in the first place and had a good experience with it, so I tried it and was not disappointed.

Review of The First Years miPump Double Deluxe Electric Breast Pump

The rather cute bag this pump comes with is probably the best part. I haven't had to pump away from home yet but I certainly wouldn't guess that a breast pump were being toted around in it.As for the double pump feature, this falls short. I knew it wasn't hands-free when I purchased it, but there is an option to double pump with just one hand - it doesn't work for me. Whether it is just the way my breasts are situated or if it is a poor design of the pumping handle itself I may never know.Pumping any amount of milk, for me, is so time consuming that it was very disheartening to find that I could not use this pump as a double pump.

I wish I had saved the money and purchased the single pump instead.

Review of The First Years Premium Single Electric Breast Pump

I got this pump over two years ago.I used it for a year with my first daughter and I've now used it for four months with my second daughter. So for durability alone I give it five stars.

It pumps relatively quickly.I can pump both sides in less than 20 minutes and the amount I get just depends on how full I am.

It is a bit noisy, but it's quiter if you keep the cover of the case down and if you need it really quiet - throw a blanket over the top.

I use mine almost exclusively at home so it's super convenient for that, I've taken it with me on one or two occassions to use while I was going to be away from my daughter for an extended period of time, and it's kind of big and bulky for that purpose.Though the case it comes in can easily be hung on a purse hook in a bathroom stall and the tubing is long enough that you could use while sitting down (though I prefer to use a handicap stall and just stand by the door) - OH what the other bathroom users must think!:-)

I'm getting ready to go on a trip for five days and I'm planning on packing this pump in my suitcase and buying a smaller pump to take with me on the plane - this one is just too big to bring on the plane and I'm sure that I could really freak some people out carrying a big black case into the bathroom and then turning it on!

AND First Years customer service is really great.I needed a replacement part after about six months of use and they were happy to send it out to me free of charge.

I would definitely buy this pump again, though if you are pumping at work or just really need the extra ten minutes I suggest you get a DOUBLE breast pump.Twenty minutes of pumping is no big deal a couple times a week, but a couple times of day would be really inconvenient.

Review of Medela Breast Pump Accessory Set

I have bought all of these items seperately and they do help a lot when you are pumping for work. It is great to keep extra pumps, valves, and storage bottles so you aren't constantly cleaning.

My favorite part of this kit is definitely the micro-steam bag. I still use this, even now that I'm not pumping as much. It is a very quick way to sterilize all the little things - you can do a bag full of pacifiers, nipples, nipple rings, etc. in 3-5 minutes, depending on the power of your microwave. Awesome!

Review of Philips Avent ISIS Manual On the Go Breast Pump - White

I have been using this pump since my oldest daughter was born, almost 8 years ago.Initially, I had nothing to compare it to, but thought it was very comfortable and worked great. When my 2nd daughter came, she was in the NICU and I was given a hospital grade pump to use until she came home. After she was released they offered for me to rent their pump which I did not find necessary because the avent pump was working so well for me.It expresses quickly, it's easy to use one-handed.I have never tried avents electric pumps but am sure they are great too.I like the control I have with the pump - the "petals" work amazingly.I have replaced this pump with each child (now 3) though it was unnecessary - they always worked - I was just eager to get rid of "clutter" as they grew older.** Note - the only thing worth noting about this product is that it is important to pay attention to the way you put the pieces back together after cleaning. There is a very small rubber piece that fits inside the pump and if it is placed upside down, the pump will not work correctly. An easy fix, but frustrating if you do not realize what is wrong.

Review of Evenflo Comfort Select Auto-Cycling Breast Pump

I purchased this pump when I went out of town with my medela PIS and forgot a couple pieces to it. I was so engorged that I had to buy a pump to get me through the night. Well I bought this pump. When I used the pump I was absolutely amazed with the fact that it didn't hurt like my medela, and it felt like the baby suckling. I liked the fact that it vibrates because it stimulates your nipples which means more let down, which also means more milk in less time. Well I used it for 3 weeks about 8 times a day. My nipple healed and boy was I happy. After using it for 3 weeks it stopped suctioning, so I called evenflo and the lady told me to make sure the parts were wet when I used it. Well I got off the phone and immediately did that and it started working again. I like the fact that it's not a lot of parts to assemble, it vibrates and the suction on max is perfect. The only thing I don't like about it is that's it seems rather loud to me. I have 3 pumps, the medala PIS, the avent isis and this one and I like this one better than the avent. If evenflo would put a quieter motor this would be a great inexpensive pump.

Review of Medela Pump In Style Advanced Breast Pump with Metro Bag

Thhis is the only pump I have ever owned, and it does the job well. I like the "clean work surface" that's included, the battery power pack, and the mesh pockets on the side of the pump for storing the tubing and AC adapter. I have been using it at work for 3 months.

However, I would not spend the extra money on the metro bag. Yes, it looks stylish and it is made of nice sturdy material, but unlike in the picture often seen with the product, the flap does not hang neatly and there is no closure to keep it from flying open. When the bag contains all the pump items, the flap rests on top and does not even fold over. The strap has no grippy strip and the bag is always slipping from my shoulder. Scrunching up my shoulder combined with the misshapen look of the bag undo any style this bag is supposed to have. If I were to buy again, I'd go for the simple black bag, which is usually about $30 less (although I don't know if that bag would behave the same way).

Review of Playtex Nursing Necessities Embrace Deluxe Double Electric Breast Pump System

This pump is a bargain! It works well and isn't as expensive as the other pumps of this grade. I personally did have trouble with the sheilds being to soft for me, so I switched them out with the Almeda ones they give you in the hospital and it worked great! Also, the system that goes with this pump is awesome, freezing and storing couldn't be any easier if you tried. One thing no one told me though as a new mom, don't expect this pump to be silent, as a matter of fact, don't expect any pump to be silent. They all make a little noise, but ladies, you have to get over it. Eventually everyone is going to know what you are sneaking away for every little while. I promise you get used to it. Also, the car adapter is such a great idea!! I thought I would never use it, but boy was it a life saver on trips! And the discrete carrying case makes it practical to take along with you to more public settings. Again though, if you are a working mom, eventually everyone will notice, it's ok. Now, I will say my pump did go out at one point and Playtex was a dream to deal with! They overnighted a new pump to me as soon as I called and when I received the new one, I just sent the old one back. The new one has worked ever since. If I had to do it all over again, I would buy the playtex again!

Review of Ameda Purely Yours Breast Pump

I bought the Purely Yours after debating and researching between it and the Medela Pump in Style. While I never tried the latter, I have been quite happy with the one I got! I must note that though I pump every day, it's only once a day, and I do it at home, so I don't have concerns about noise or industrial strength pumping.

The pumping: It's comfortable for me, and the adjustable suction and speed are key. It is easy to switch between single and dual pumping. If you're going for the latter, though, I strongly recommend getting a hands-free pumping bra, because it's a bit much to juggle both bottles and the dials, particularly if you are also trying to keep an eye on your baby (which I do, pumping in the morning). I do get plenty of milk with this pump.

The noise: It doesn't seem so noisy to me, but I do it at home; I might be more aware of the noise if I were pumping at work. It makes a small beeping noise with each pump in addition to the motor noise. Sometimes I put a pillow over it to muffle the sound if the babe is next to me and on the verge of sleeping.

Cleaning: It's a breeze! I fill a bowl with hot soapy water and stick the pieces in there while I do the rest of the dishes, and that does it. I have heard that the white valves are easily torn, but I haven't had any problem with that, possibly because I'm careful with them as a result of having heard about their fragility. But then again my husband never read about the fragile valves, and he's never torn one either (and yes, he does wash the pump pieces often!). The pump comes with 6 valves, and I'm still on my first two (though I've only been pumping 2 months).

Portability: This version does not come with a bag, which I don't need. It is very small and light, though, so if you do need to carry it around I don't think that would be any problem. If you're pumping away from home, I would spend the extra money and get one of the bags that is made to fit the pump and all the other pieces.

Storage: I use the Playtex One Step storage system to store the breastmilk, and I've been quite happy with that. It's no problem to use them together, the adapter fits perfectly.

Basically, this pump is great, and I plan to stick with it for future children! My only advice to others shopping for a pump would be to consider other brands. I only considered Ameda and Medela, because that's what the hospital recommended. However, I've been eyeballing other pumps since I bought mine, and it looks like others have come up with some innovations that would be worth checking out.

Review of Medela Pump in Style and New Pump in Style Advanced Breast Pump Tubing - Pack of 2

After reading the reviews of this tubing, I thought I would add a few details that may be helpful. Before ordering tubing for your pump, you need to identify which type of pump you have. (Is it a Medela Pump In Style Original or a Pump In Style Advanced?) This particular tubing will fit all Original Pump In Style pumps (Original Pump In Style pumps cannot be removed from the carrying bag it comes in) and it will fit Pump In Style Advanced pumps that were manufactured AFTER July of 2006. If you have a Pump In Style Advanced pump manufactured BEFORE July of 2006, these are not the correct tubes. There is another page to order those from. (They are commonly called First Issue Pump In Style Advanced tubes)
AT this time, none of Medela tubing comes in retail packaging. It is sent to the retailer in a giant ziploc bag and the seller divides them up and usually puts them in smaller bags of some sort to send to the customer. None of the tubing comes pre-sterlized so you might want to sterilize it yourself before using it. The silicone the tubes are made of tends to attract every piece of lint and anything else in it's general vicinity so even in the most careful re-packaging conditions you may find less than gleaming, shiny tubes but they should never have hair wrapped around them, as one reviewer complained! If you are unsure of which kind of pump you have or when it was manufactured, the customer service representatives at Medela are so friendly and should be able to help you identify it. The tubing works wonderfully if you get the type intended for the pump you have.

Review of Evenflo Comfort Select Performance Single Electric Breast Pump

I don't have any problems with this pump except that it is loud and it doesn't have as strong of suction when you are running it cordless. Otherwise-its wonderful. Review of Lansinoh Double Electric Breast Pump - 1 Count

It is so difficult to shop for a breast pump. If you buy one, you are stuck with it.You can't return pumps ... not even to Target or Walmart. So, hopefully, this will be a helpful review.

I researched quite a bit before choosing this pump. For my needs, it works great. It is very quiet and very efficient. There are only a few parts, so cleaning and assembly is very easy.It is very simple - one dial for suction and one dial for speed.I have been using it semi-daily for a month now and have not had any difficulties.

It works on A/C adapter or on batteries.I am not a full-time pumper; I just use it once or twice a day to increase production and have a little milk stored for emergency or super-hungry-baby days.

It is quiet enough that I can pump on one side while nursing the baby on the other.I love that you don't need to clean the tubing ... all parts that come in contact with the milk are easily cleaned/sanitized.

Also, Avent makes a conversion kit (available on Amazon and at Babies R Us for about $10) so that you can pump directly into Avent bottles rather than transferring the milk into bags, etc.Works GREAT!

If you are totally new to pumps, here's my advice:skip the manual or single pumps.I had the Isis manual pump for my first baby and that was a complete waste of money.I would sit and pump for 20-30 minutes and could barely get two ounces.Electric pumps are so much more efficient.Spend the extra money and get a good pump.It helps increase your milk production and can help with sore nipples.

Review of Medela Freestyle Breast Pump

After a few weeks of feeling like a pack mule dragging my Medela Pump in Style from my first child back & forth to the office and using the Avent hand pump when I traveled, I finally splurged and bought the Freestyle. It is so light and easy to use it was worth every penny.I have now used it at home, in the office, in the car, on airplanes, at airports...

Why I love it:
1) It's superlight...the entire Freestyle pump feels like it's about the same weight as the power brick from my Pump in Style.
2) The fact that you can take the unit and put it in any bag you want is terrific.
3) The valves and tubes are easier to deal with than the Pump in Style (esp. the valves).
4) The digital display with timer is surprisingly useful.
5) The rechargeable batteries make it easy to pump in places where there may not be outlets.

The only negative: I think the hands-free mechanism is kind of convoluted, but I just use the Easy Expressions Bustier (which looks ridiculous but is nonetheless effective).

The Medela Freestyle Breast Pump offers:
  • Hands-free operation.
  • Two-phase expression pumping for maximum milk.
  • SoftFit breast shield provides exceptional comfort.
  • Included containers and lids for safe storage.

The LCD screen lights up for easy viewing at night. View larger.

The Freestyle features two-phase expression technology for maximum milk extraction. View larger.

The Freestyle makes it easy to pump milk hands-free. View larger. Hands-Free Operation For True Pumping Mobility
The Freestyle is unique among breast pumps because it offers you the freedom to do other things while you're pumping. The hands-free operation is user-friendly and doesn't demand the use of complicated contraptions or accessories. And because it weighs less than one pound, it's a snap to take this pump to work or on trips--simply toss it into your purse or the cute included tote bag and you're ready to go.
Two-Phase Expression Technology
The Freestyle features two-phase expression technology, an advanced pumping pattern that mimics a baby's natural nursing rhythm. This system works in two modes: the simulation mode and the expression mode. The simulation mode simulates your baby's initial rapid sucking to start your milk flowing, while the expression mode simulates your baby's slower, deeper suckling to express your milk gently yet efficiently. These modes work together to make pumping a quick and painless process.
Comfortable and Convenient Operation
Convenient and easy to use, the Freestyle has a rechargeable battery that allows for three full hours of pumping time per charge. This battery also makes it a snap to pump in places--like airports or other public spaces--where outlets may be difficult to find.
The clear and easy-to-read LCD screen has a digital display that lights up, a feature that's particularly welcome during late-night feeding sessions. There's even a memory button so moms can save their favorite pumping patterns for use during future sessions. Finally, the valves and tubes are uncomplicated and simple and straightforward to use.
The Freestyle comes with four five-ounce containers and lids for safe and hygienic breast milk storage, another great on-the-go option. For added peace of mind, the Freestyle is backed by a 1-year limited on the motor, and a 90-day limited warranty on the other parts.
